Tenerife...

...…viena no septiņām Kanāriju salām. Tenerifē notiek viens no “grandiozākajiem” karnevāliem pasaulē.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and the seat of the island council (cabildo insular). The city is capital of the autonomous communityof Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, until in 1927 a decree ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains as at present.

fo-tenerife-teideGolf courses, yacht marinas, conference centres, theme parks... Tenerife offers a complete range of leisure activities to satisfy all kinds of tastes.

Under the attentive gaze of El Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, and with the sea as an ever-present background, the most significant feature of Tenerife is the wealth and diversity of its landscape and micro-climates.

Just over two thousand square kilometres of rugged terrain forming pools in beaches and coves that have turned the Island into one of the Meccas of European tourism.

fo-tenerife-panoramicaOn the Island, you can combine a peaceful stay with some healthy walking or rural tourism, or a beach holiday in the sun with a slightly more high risk sport like windsurfing, climbing, sailing, paragliding, diving or horseback riding.

This is an island with a varied list of native species of flora and fauna and several distinct topographies. 45% of the total area of the Island is under some form of protection. This includes the Teide National Park, the Corona Forestal Nature Park and the Anaga and Teno Rural Parks.

For those who prefer to feel the Island's natural environment close up and personal, there are several distinct topographies.

fo-tenerife-fuenteEl Teide, on the other hand, is the ideal place for walking and gazing at the stars. In fact, the Canary Island Astrophysics Institute is close to the mountaintop, next to the Cañadas del Teide. Tourists with other tastes will find a great nightlife in Puerto de la Cruz, Las Americas, Santa Cruz and La Laguna. Theme parks, exhibition halls, cinemas, museums and other centres complete the top-class range of activities.

Tenerife in the words of French poet, André Breton, 'offers a surreal paradise', because of the diversity of the climate, the contrasting landscapes, the natural wealth and character of the local inhabitants.

fo-tenerife-lunesVisitors who come here appreciate the open, liberal and hospitable nature of the Islanders, who are proud to show off the countless charms of their land to outsiders. You can immerse yourself in the sun, beaches, culture, fun and natural environment that Tenerife has to offer, appreciating with every sip just how magnificent Mother Nature has been to this lands of paradise. The expression 'with every sip' is not a cliché as, along with a delicious cuisine, the Island produces wines that are born directly out of the bowels of the volcano. Tenerife is an island of delicious feasts and dishes.

Why Go?

Tenerife, the biggest and best-known Canary Island, receives over 10 million visitors a year, most of whom head straight to the tourist resorts of the south. But step beyond the lobster-red sunloungers, lap dancers and best bitter on tap and what you’ll find is a cultured and civilised island of extraordinary diversity. This potpourri of experiences includes tropical-forest walks and designer-shop struts; dark forays into volcanic lava; a sexy and sultry Carnaval celebration that’s second only to Rio, and a stash of museums, temples to modern art and creaky old colonial towns. But above all else this is an island of drama, and nothing comes more dramatic than the snow-draped Pico del Teide, Spain’s tallest mountain and home to some of the most fabulous hiking in all the country.

When to Go
Tenerife is famed for its eternal spring-like climate and therefore anytime is prime time here. However, there are some moments of the year that are better than others. Sunworshippers will probably find May to June and September off er the best combination of hot sun and lower crowds. Surfers will fi nd the best waves between December and
March, and scuba divers the calmest waters in July and August. Teide can be hiked at any time but deep winter can see snowfall closing the mountain and high summer can be
too hot.
